U4GM Where to Start and Solve Keeping the Old Traditions in D4

I'm usually in Diablo 4 for the chaos, but every so often I'll veer off for a small, odd secret because it breaks up the grind and pads your renown. If you're already out in the Dry Steppes chasing events, grabbing Diablo 4 gold, or just filling in fog-of-war, "Keeping the Old Traditions" is one of those quick puzzles that feels like the devs slipped you a wink.

Where it starts

You won't pick this up from an NPC with a big quest icon. Head into the Untamed Scarps area and look for a dusty book on the ground called The Lonely Offering. Read it and you'll get a single line that's more riddle than instruction, basically daring you to figure it out instead of following a checklist. The game does toss you a blue search marker afterward, but don't expect it to explain the "how" part.

Finding the statue

The marker leads toward the Valley of the Strayed. When you arrive, you're looking for a weathered statue tucked against a rocky wall, the kind of thing you might jog past while sprinting between objectives. There's no obvious interact prompt, no glow, nothing. It's easy to waste time circling it, clicking around, or checking your journal like you missed a step. You didn't. The riddle is the step.

What you actually have to do

Walk right up to the front of the statue and open your emote wheel. On PC that's E; on controller it's Up on the D-pad. Here's the catch: the emote you need often isn't equipped. Go into the wheel's customize menu, find the "Yes" emote in your list, and assign it to a slot you can trigger. Then face the statue and use "Yes." No fancy timing, no combat requirement, just the emote in the right place.

The payoff and why it matters

Once you do it, a hidden chest pops up beside you, and it's weirdly satisfying for something so small. You'll typically get a mix of gold, XP, and consumables like elixirs; the bigger win is the Dry Steppes renown if you're pushing those regional rewards. Don't stress if it doesn't spit out a legendaryloot can vary, and plenty of players report different resultsbut it's still a clean little boost for the time spent. Just remember it's a one-and-done per character, so if you're planning a route for alts or thinking about your overall progression, it's worth folding in while you're already out there doing a diablo 4 gold farm loop in the Steppes.
